The Microcredit Summit Campaign extends its deepest congratulations to Professor Muhammad Yunus, Managing Director of Grameen Bank and a member of the Microcredit Summit Campaign Executive Committee. The White House announced today that Professor Yunus will be one of the sixteen recepients of teh 2009 U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom. The Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian award. Professor Yunus will receive the award from President Barack Obama at a White House ceremony on August 12, 2009.
Other recipients receiving this honor along with Professor Yunus include: Mary Robinson, first female President of Ireland and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, as well as Desmond Tutu, a leading human rights activist from South Africa.
This award recognizes a diverse set of achievements and contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, and to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors have.
