Congratulations to this week’s winner of the Raffle for Institutional Action Plan Submitters, Self-Help And Rehabilitation Program (SHARP) of Bangladesh!
Self-Help And Rehabilitation Program (SHARP) began its activities as an NGO in 1994, working to improve the socio-economic conditions of the ultra poor through microfinance and job creation. Believing that the poor should be self sufficient, SHARP works to fulfill their basic needs, especially women and children, through trainings and other poverty oriented programs.
SHARP provides a variety of poverty focused outreach programs. Through its focus on creating self employment for the poor, it offers electrical or mechanical training and technical support. SHARP focuses on women’s empowerment through employment, providing jobs to a number of female employees itself, as well as training women in income generating activities such as mat-making and tailoring. The institution works to improve health conditions, non-formal primary education, and the nutritional status of poor children. With the support of the Government of Bangladesh, SHARP provides uniforms, books and other learning materials. SHARP is also working to establish rights of women and extending legal support to them against violence.
The institution works to employ qualified and experienced personnel with a variety of backgrounds and training. This helps ensure the proper utilization of local resources to improve the socioeconomic conditions of the targeted poor beneficiaries through different microfinance programs. SHARP’s ultimate goal is to work with the poor, especially children and women to create sustainable development and equal opportunity, providing direct support to more than 40,000 families through with its 500 staff members.
